Dog Coat Sizing Tips
Note: The coat size is the back measurement of the dog coat. These are genuine Foggy Mountain Dog Coats with the even number size tag inside the neck opening. We have added 1/2" to sizes on the ordering pages to reflect the actual back measurement of these dog coats. For example, size 12 actually measures 12.5", which is the same for all dog coat sizes.
Follow these tips to help you find the right dog coat size for your dog.
- Your dog must be standing straight for proper measurement
- Find the base of your dog's neck by running your fingers down the back of your dog's neck until you feel where the shoulder blades start
- With your dog standing straight with its head up, measure from the base of its neck (including shoulder blades) to the base of its tail without letting its rear drop
- It's easier said than done, so having two people can be helpful
- Check the breed chart below with the following in mind: Dogs, like people, come in all shapes in sizes, so ask yourself whether your dog is smaller or larger than is considered average for its breed
- Is your dog between sizes? Consider these tips:
- Tail up: Round down in size except if your dog is muscular and/or chunky like a Pit Bull or Bull Terrier
- Tail down: Round up except if your dog is small-boned, slender, or petite
- Large, muscular, or chunky dogs: Round up
- Small-boned, slender, or petite small dogs round down and/or check out the dachshund cut coats
- Short legged dogs: If your dog has short legs and a rectangular body type (instead of a more square body type), you may want to look at the Dachshund cut dog coats, which have shorter side depth (girth) and smaller neck openings. Examples include Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Yorkie, Dachshund, and other very thin dogs.
- If you find your dog's coat size much larger or smaller than the recommended sizes below, you may want to double-check its back measurement
